The site is a mosaic of heathland, peatbog, wetland and meadows dotted with thousands of ponds. It is a hotspot for birds, plants, dragonflies and frogs.
Réserve Naturelle du Pinail has free access year-round! Very nice landscapes and great birding. Among the birds you can encounter are Dartford Warbler , Grasshopper Warbler , Meadow Pipit, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Montagu's Harrier and Eurasian Nightjar. Botanists and frog people will be absolutely happy with the place too.
You can park at the visitor center (Réserve naturelle nationale du Pinail 86210 Vouneuil-sur-Vienne). Click on the P in the map to get directions. The site is discovered from an interpretive trail of 2 kilometers, crisscrossing between moors and meadows, ponds and peat bogs, for a walk of about 2 hours.
