Description

The viewpoint of São João das Arribas is located in the natural park of Douro Internacional. You have magnificent views on the cliffs that surround the river Douro, but also on Spain. Water has carved the banks of the River Douro for centuries, forming monumental canyons covered with the local flora and populated by many species of bird. Junipers, cork-oaks, chestnut trees and holm oaks can be found in the park’s forests. Birds you can see here are Egyptian Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Red Kite, Black Stork, Blue Rock Thrush and Golden Oriole. But many more, see the birdlist below.

Access

Located 9km from Miranda do Douro the 'Miradouro' offers a magnificent view of the gorge through which the river Douro flows and on Spain. There is an unpaved path down from Aldeia Nova, about 800m to the viewpoint. You can take a walking route or enjoy the view. There are also picnic areas. The “Castro of Aldeia Nova” is a fortified settlement from the Iron Age.
