Description

Loango National Park protects diverse coastal habitats including part of the 220-square-kilometre Iguéla Lagoon, the only significant example of a typical western African lagoon system that is protected within a national park. Loango National Park is a remarkable place where savanna, rainforest, mangroves, and pristine beaches meet, creating a rich mosaic of ecosystems. The park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to a wide variety of wildlife including forest elephants, hippos, buffalos, gorillas, chimpanzees, and rare species like the giant pangolin. One of the special features of Loango is the sight of hippos and elephants on the beach. Loango’s coastal waters are also important habitats for marine turtles, dolphins, and migrating whales.

Birdwatching is also very good in Loango National Park. The Park has a recorded bird list of over 300 species. Its coastal savannas, forests, wetlands, and rivers support sought-after species like the African River Martin, Rosy Bee-eater, Congo Serpent-Eagle, Forbes's Plover, White-bellied Kingfisher, Loango Weaver, Hartlaub's Duck, African Finfoot and Black-headed Bee-eater.

Access

Loango National Park is located on the west coast of Gabon, along the Atlantic Ocean. The park lies south of the town of Port-Gentil, covering part of Gabon’s Ogooué-Maritime province. From Port-Gentil you can take a boat transfer to Ndola Camp. Because of the park’s remote setting and limited infrastructure, travel arrangements are typically made through specialized tour operators who coordinate transfers, park permits, and accommodations.

Ndola Camp is situated on the northern point of Loango National Park, in a forest overlooking Iguela lagoon. The camp provides stunning scenery of Loango, including guided safaris, beach walks, and boat trips.
