Description
Štrbské Pleso is a beautiful mountain lake in the High Tatras region in Slovakia. You can watch several mountain bird species along with common birds in the region. The species you can observe here include a very common Ořešník kropenatý, orel skalní, hýl obecný, králíček ohnivý, čečetka zimní, sýkora parukářka, pěvuška modrá, křivka obecná, linduška horská, skorec vodní, kos horský, and pěvuška podhorní. You can take a relaxing walk around the lake or hike further into the mountains. The region is a protected national nature reservation (TANAP) and is therefore recommended to inform yourself about local rules before visiting. The mountain lake is located right under the High Tatras mountains, offering a breathtaking view. The lake is surrounded by steeper hills that transition into meadows and forested areas, offering multiple hiking trails (open seasonally) that connect to the main walking path circling the lake. The path is mostly shaded by trees along the sides and occasionally opens up to spots along the lake’s edge (which can be quite rocky at times).
Due to an easy, flattened gravel path in a scenic location, the area is popular with both locals and tourists and therefore can often get crowded – you will encounter lots of families and dog walkers too. For undisturbed nature observation during high tourist season, you might want to begin your walk earlier in the morning (before 8-9 a.m.) and, optionally, leave the main path and explore one of the hiking trails, which tend to discourage families and larger groups. In addition to that, the lake features a very popular cable car to "Solisko", offering a base station for numerous hikes. There are restaurants and cafés in the vicinity.
