Description

Glaskogens Naturreservat is a vast, quiet wilderness area with forests, long ridges, and a lot of water. It covers roughly 29,000 hectares. The area is in a hilly landscape and has several lakes. The two largest lakes are Stora Gla and Övre Gla. Many trails run through the reserve, connecting viewpoints, lakeshores, and old forest stands, while the waterways form a canoe network of around 150 kilometres.

With a lot of luck you can find rare birds like puštík vousatý, kulíšek nejmenší, tetřívek obecný or tetřev hlušec. More common species include hohol severní, potáplice severní, datel černý, hýl obecný, včelojed lesní, krkavec velký, lejsek šedý and jeřáb popelavý. Ořešník kropenatý also lives in the area but can be hard to spot.

Access

Glaskogens Naturreservat is located in western Sweden, about 90 km west of Karlstad. The heart of the reserve is the small settlement of Lenungshammar, where visitors can get information, rent canoes, and use basic services. The reserve maintains shelters, fire pits, and simple facilities along the trails. Press P on the map for directions to Lenungshammar.

Glaskogens Naturreservat is a huge nature reserve and there are many trails to explore the area. On the map we have shown two circular walks, each with a length of about 10 km. These are just a suggestion, there are many other trails to choose from.

For more information about accommodation, canoe rental, etc., see the link to the Glaskogen website below.

Extra info

Forestry is practiced in large parts of the area and you can see clearings. Only about 600 of the area’s scant 29,000 hectares are protected against felling according to reserve regulations, biotope protection and nature conservation agreements. The Glaskogen nature reserve is part of the EU’s network of valuable nature, Natura 2000, with the Rödvattnet-Majendal area.

There are also four bird protection areas with access prohibited for parts of the year. It is forbidden to stay within these areas during the period 1 April – 31 August, except for the bird protection area in Lelången, where the prohibition period is instead 1 April – 31 July. Please note that the bird protection areas reach 100m out into the water.
