Description

Lower Hartshay and the Cromford Canal support a wide range of birds throughout the year. krahujec obecný are often seen hunting over the village and surrounding fields, while káně lesní soar overhead and the occasional luňák červený drifts through. volavka popelavá regularly feed along the reedbeds and canal edges, with konipas horský picking insects from the water margins. mlynařík dlouhoocasý move through the trees in busy family parties, and cetie jižní are frequently heard calling from dense reedbeds.

Autumn and winter bring an increase in wildfowl and passage birds, with berneška velká , husa velká , kachna divoká , čírka obecná and hvízdák eurasijský using the canal and nearby waters. čejka chocholatá , bekasina otavní and Chřástal vodní may appear in wetter areas, while racek chechtavý , racek stříbřitý and racek žlutonohý gather on open water and fields. Thrushes are a highlight at this time of year, with drozd cvrčala and drozd kvíčala arriving from the continent alongside resident drozd zpěvný and drozd brávník. Mixed tit flocks, králíček obecný , stehlík obecný , čížek lesní and čečetka zimní are regular, and corvids including kavka obecná , havran polní , straka obecná and sojka obecná are ever-present.

Spring and summer see the area come alive with breeding birds and migrants. rorýs obecný , vlaštovka obecná and jiřička obecná feed low over the canal and reedbeds, often joined by hunting ostříž lesní in warm weather. Reedbeds hold rákosník obecný , rákosník proužkovaný and cetie jižní , while pěnice pokřovní and budníček menší sing from scrub and hedgerows. konipas horský , Slípka zelenonohá , lyska černá , sýkora modřinka and sýkora koňadra regularly breed along the canal, and skřivan polní can be heard over nearby fields. Occasional highlights include čečetka tmavá cvrčilka zelená , koliha velká and poštolka obecná.

Overall, this short walk offers excellent habitat diversity and rewarding birding in all seasons, with something new to see throughout the year.
