Description
An extensive area of self-sown scrubland holds good numbers of warblers in summer, mainly budníček větší and budníček menší, but also pěnice pokřovní and pěnice černohlavá. More mature trees provide habitat for puštík obecný. brhlík lesní and alexandr malý have become common in recent years. The Wallsend Burn holds regular ledňáček říční and konipas horský, and occasional skorec vodní in winter. In its lower tidal section vodouš rudonohý is regular, and the semi-tame kachna divokás can attract other ducks, including husice liščí, čírka obecná, and more rarely ostralka štíhlá and kachnička mandarinská. There is limited viewing of the River Tyne where the stream runs into the Tyne, but is still worth checking for inland seabirds on the main river; potáplice lední, alkoun úzkozobý and alka malá have all been seen here on occasion, and in summer there is a constant procession of racek tříprstýs moving to and from their nesting sites further upsteam.
