Description
The Drachensee (Dragon Lake) is a reservoir of approximately 175 hectares. The lake is divided into four zones. An operational and safety zone, a leisure and recreation zone, an ecological regeneration zone, and a nature experience and environmental education zone. In the ecological zone in the east of the reservoir nature is allowed to regenerate undisturbed. For birdwatching the ecological zone is most interesting.
Birds you can observe include Skeand, Atlingand, Krikand, Rustand, Stor Skallesluger, Vibe, Dobbeltbekkasin, Mudderklire, Toppet Lappedykker, Lille Lappedykker, Sivsanger, Rørspurv, Gulspurv, Gøg, and during migration Fiskeørn.

Access
The Drachensee is located 3 km east of the town Furth im Wald. From Regensburg, drive northeast along the B20 toward Cham and Furth im Wald. Once in town, the Drachensee is signposted and lies just outside the center. There are birdwatching stations and an outlook tower on the east side of the reservoir, each with a parking lot. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking. You can explore the most interesting parts of the east bank on foot or by bike via paths that run along the shore.
