Description

The area north of the small town of Daaden near the very old beech tree "Hüllbuche" is a structurally rich area with mixed species forests, a little valley with meadows and a small water stream. Around the marked route, forestry activities were reduced already some years ago and it contains a good amount of old and dead trees, making it a perfect habitat for cavity-nesting birds.

Especially in spring, you can hear and see different woodpeckers such as Sortspætte, Mellemflagspætte and Stor Flagspætte, but also Huldue, Ravn and many different songbirds. Grønspætte occurs in the adjacent meadows and can also be heard. When it is breeding season, the woodpeckers sometimes choose to nest in the old tree trunks very close to the path and you may have the chance to observe them feeding their young.

Access

The Hüllwald is located north of the town of Daaden. The area is very popular among locals for walking and cycling. It has plenty of car parking spaces, but don't be discouraged by a seemingly high amount of traffic, the paths marked on the route are usually very quiet. Click on a P in the map for directions to a parking spot. The town of Daaden can also be reached by train, but from there it is quite a walk (around 45 minutes, all uphill) to reach the Hüllwald.

Extra info

The marked path is quite short but crosses a usually very small and shallow stream that can be crossed with ease unless you have reduced mobility (see picture). Otherwise, just leave out this little section and focus on the outer paths.

I especially recommend this area in early spring when the woodpeckers can be very active. Do not ignore the nice songbirds in the area as well.

As the marked path is quite short, the fields and forests to the northeast can also be worth visiting. Moreover, the famous old beech tree “Hüllbuche” (around 250 years old) is located just off the marked route and is worth a short visit. The tree is indicated with a star symbol on the map.
