Ermita de San Jose

Lanzarote  >  Spain

A valley with a mixture of active and inactive smallholdings and uncultivated scrub. A couple of smallholdings have noisy dogs but they are not a problem.

Description

The Ermita de San Jose valley is just north of Teguise. The area off the LZ-10 allows a circular walk on fairly flat well defined tracks. It is popular with runners and cyclists so mid-week is usually quieter. Kanarisk Piber, Stor Tornskade, Spansk Spurv, Tårnfalk and Ravn are easily seen. Triel is regularly heard and sometimes seen. Hærfugl and Kravetrappe are possible.

Triel and other birds can also be seen above the valley but that does involve a somewhat energetic scramble.

Access

The Ermita de San Jose area is located just outside Teguise. I used to park at the back of the school and I assume that is still possible, but staff and students do park there. I now turn off the LZ-10 going towards Haria on the unmade road signed Las Nieves 5 and park either where the unmade road goes right at a crossroads or continue straight at that point and park just after the junction. Access by cycle would be easy and buses go to Teguise. It would then be a relatively short walk to the school and start from there. Press a P on the map for directions.

Extra info

A telescope might be useful if trying. To see Triel at the site identified on the west side of the valley, where I have only ever been able to hear them. However I have once seen one on a cultivated part of the valley floor, so they could turn up anywhere.
