Description
An extensive area of self-sown scrubland holds good numbers of warblers in summer, mainly Løvsanger and Gransanger, but also Gærdesanger and Munk. More mature trees provide habitat for Natugle. Spætmejse and Alexanderparakit have become common in recent years. The Wallsend Burn holds regular Isfugl and Bjergvipstjert, and occasional Vandstær in winter. In its lower tidal section Rødben is regular, and the semi-tame Gråands can attract other ducks, including Gravand, Krikand, and more rarely Spidsand and Mandarin-and. There is limited viewing of the River Tyne where the stream runs into the Tyne, but is still worth checking for inland seabirds on the main river; Islom, Lomvie and Alk have all been seen here on occasion, and in summer there is a constant procession of Rides moving to and from their nesting sites further upsteam.
