Description
Westwood Dam and Woodland is a hidden gem for birdwatching in Sheffield. The area has a variety of birds of prey including Musvåge, Vandrefalk, Tårnfalk, Spurvehøg, Natugle and Kirkeugle. As well as this, the small streams and brooks found within the woodland support Bjergvipstjert territories, as well as small numbers of Grå Fluesnapper in the summer.
Winter migrants include Vindrossel and Sjagger, as well as the occasional flock of Silkehale. Summer sightings include migrant Løvsanger, Havesanger, and Gransanger, as well as breeding Skovsneppe territories. The open water of Westwood Dam and Reservoir can produce some surprises, including Sangsvane in previous years. The woodland supported some of the city's last known pairs of Lille Flagspætte in the early 2000s.
