Description
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for Pibeand, Knarand and good numbers of Lille Lappedykker. Lower fish numbers mean Toppet Lappedykker are only in low numbers, Knopsvane numbers can be very high for a inner city location and Hvinand and Stor Skallesluger occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have Krikand, Skeand, Rørhøne, Blishøne and Fiskehejre though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including Stormmåge and unusually for such an inland site Ride.
(*3), the area of trees at the Eastern end of the park has Grønsisken and Sortmejse, Halemejse, Blåmejse and Musvit are numerous. During Spring/Summer Tornsanger, Løvsanger, Gransanger, Munk, Bysvale, Landsvale and Mursejler can be seen. Fjordterne regularly turn up on passage.
