Winners Leica Noctivid and Televid 82 announced!

Birdingplaces.eu was launched at the beginning of 2020. To stimulate as many bird watchers as possible to add bird areas to Birdingplaces we started a promotion together with Leica. Bird watchers who added 5 areas to the website had a chance to win the Leica Noctivid 10x42 binoculars, with 10 areas also the Leica Apo Televid 82 telescope. The go-in-and-win promotion helped realize a huge increase in the number of bird areas! In less than a year, no fewer than 2000 nice bird areas have been put on the Birdingplaces map. The goal of having 2000 bird areas online within two years was surpassed within a year!

Thank you Leica!

Leica is the main sponsor of Birdingplaces. From the very first moment Leica saw the potential of our community for birders in Europe and they supported us right from the start. Their support made it possible to create an ad-free website that is free for all users. We are proud that a quality brand like Leica supports us in this way. The 'go-in-and-win' promotion with Leica has given the website a big boost. Ultimately, a winner for the Leica Noctivid 10x42 could be drawn from 105 birders (who had added 5 or more areas before December 1). 48 birders with 10 placed areas (but often many more) competed for the prize draw for the Leica Apo Televid 82 with 25-50x WW ASPH zoom eyepiece.

But… who has won the Leica Noctivid and the Leica Apo Televid now?

Congratulations HGON!

The Leica Noctivid 10x42 binoculars were won by HGON from Germany. HGON stands for Hessische Gesellschaft für Ornithologie und Naturschutz. This is an active group of birders in the German state of Hesse that is committed to the protection of birds. HGON has placed a wonderful number of 22 bird areas in the Hesse region online at www.birdingplaces.eu. With the Leica Noctivid, HGON wins top binoculars. Or as described in a review of these binoculars by BirdLife Netherlands: "Compact, stylish and elegant, but also incredibly robust and durable. The optical quality and focusing precision of the Leica Noctivid binoculars is unmatched by any other binoculars on the market." HGON will use the binoculars in field work and educational activities for their members. For example, the group monitors the distribution and breeding of all common bird species in the Hesse region. The chairman of HGON, Dr. Tobias Erik Reiners, received the Leica Noctivid 10x42 from Björn Friedrich and Dimitri Wegel of Leica Germany. Tobias Erik Reiners: "Our Birding NGO, the HGON promotes birding and conservation since more than 50 years. Our passion was always driven by all the special places and birding sanctuaries in Hesse. Therefore, we are more than happy to share our passion for special places on Birdingplaces.eu and also demonstrate the conservation success".

We are convinced that the members of HGON will enjoy using this fantastic Leica binoculars.

Congratulations Hannah Driesse!

The Leica Apo Televid 82 with 25-50x WW ASPH zoom eyepiece was won by Hannah Driesse from the Netherlands. Hannah placed 12 bird areas on the map of www.birdingplaces.eu. Ten of them in the Netherlands and two areas in France. With the Leica Apo Televid 82, Hannah has won a robust and compact telescope with a fantastically clear, sharp and natural image. The great asset of the Apo Televid 82 is its ease of use. The telescope is not too big (328x108x101mm) and feels light (1,469g including eyepiece) compared to other telescopes. That, together with the phenomenal image quality, makes the Leica Televid 82 the ideal telescope to take with you in the field.

Hannah received the telescope at the Leica Store in Amsterdam. She is delighted:: "I am suddenly the proud owner of a high quality telescope! I always do birdwatching in combination with a long walk. However, I often did not feel like carrying a heavy telescope on a walk. But the Apo Televid hardly weighs more than my binoculars, and the added value is enormous. For example, we immediately tried it out the first weekend in the Nieuwe Driemanspolder near The Hague (a wetland discovered via birdingplaces.eu!), From a very large distance we could easily identify teals and wigeons. In addition, I could observe a beautiful pair of goldeneye and a group of courting black-necked grebes. I was amazed. I can now see details that I have never seen before. The Leica Televid really does make a huge difference! I am so happy that I can take it with me this birding season on my bird hikes. Thank you so much Birdingplaces and Leica! "

Birdingplaces.eu thanks all birders

Birdingplaces birders, thanks for posting all those beautiful areas! Together you make Birdingplaces a success! Of course only two prize winners could be drawn, but all those beautiful bird areas that you have opened up for each other are of course also worth gold. And every day thanks to you beautiful and new bird areas are added.

Leica Netherlands, thank you for your support. Birdingplaces birders, thank you for your great efforts. We will march on, and hopefully all of you too. Keep on sharing great birding spots on Birdingplaces! #EnjoyAndProtect!

With great thanks on behalf of Team Birdingplaces
