Beschreibung

Pirang Forest is one of the finest examples of evergreen gallery forest in the Gambia. It is a small but ecologically rich patch of forest, a rare remnant of evergreen gallery forest in The Gambia with tall canopy trees reaching up to 30 meters. The forest is surrounded by mangroves, salt flats, cropland, and the Gambia River. At 65 hectare, this community owned and managed reserve is said to be one of the best birding sites in the Gambia and is home to over 200 bird species. Including some rare and exciting forest birds such as the stunningly beautiful White-spotted Flufftail. Other birds you might spot include Verreaux's Eagle-Owl, Green Crombec, Violet Turaco, Green Turaco, African Wood-Owl, Buff-spotted Woodpecker, Collared Sunbird, African Pygmy-Kingfisher, Bearded Barbet, African Green-Pigeon, African Pied Hornbill, Brown-throated Wattle-eye, and Black-necked Weaver.

Zugang

Pirang Forest (sometimes called Pirang-Bonto National Forest) is located near the village of Pirang, about 45 km from Banjul. Drive east from Banjul or Serrekunda towards Brikama. Continue on the South Bank Road (Trans-Gambia Highway) until you reach Pirang village. The forest lies just outside the village. You can visit the area with your own car or taxi. Press P on the map for directions.

At the location you can be guided by Kawsu Gibba or one of his staff, they know how to find the rarest birds in the forest. There is a small entrance fee (about 100 Gambian Dalasi, which is about € 1.30). There are trails crisscrossing the forest and some waterholes.
