Beschreibung
David Gareji Monastery is located in a remote and expansive part of Georgia. Surrounded by steppes and sandstone formations, the monastery is worth spending a half day exploring. The monastery is carved into a rock and surrounded by sparse vegetation. Several birds breed in the immediate vicinity of the monastery, such as Felsenkleiber, Steinsperling, Wiedehopf Blaumerle, Rotkopfwürger and Maurensteinschmätzer.
In addition, during a visit in spring and autumn one can see various migratory birds that temporarily reside around the monastery, such as Schwarzstirnwürger, Klappergrasmücke, Zwergschnäpper, Östliche Orpheusgrasmücke, Ortolan and Rosenstar.
When the air has warmed up a bit Bienenfresser, Kaiseradler, Zwergadler Alpensegler, Mauersegler, Schmutzgeier, Gänsegeier and Mönchsgeier are present around the monastery.

Zugang
David Gareji monastery is located 70 km southeast of Tblisi. The monastery can be reached from Tbilisi by taking the main road S5 towards Sagarejo. In this village, turn onto the side road (172). This is a well-paved road that ends at the monastery. Press P on the map for directions.
The monastery is accessible by both private car and public transport. It is recommended to use your own car so you can make stops along the way. The area around Udabno is rich in birdlife and worth making a few stops.
A visit to the monastery can be done in about an hour. Due to the travel time, you should allow half a day for this.

The monastery is located on the border with Azerbaijan, and this border is heavily guarded. It's possible to climb the rock for a better view, but be aware of border guards on the rock.
