Beschreibung

Vardzia is a 12th‑century cave monastery complex. The site combines a great site with historical significance with birdwatching. Felsenkleiber are numerous and a walk through the many rooms hacked into the stone face of the valley will result in hearing Rotstirngirlitz and Blaumerle. During Spring and Summer months, Alpensegler can be seen high above the valley. There are many nests of Felsenschwalbe and Mehlschwalbe along the rock faces and Chukarhuhn can be heard in the surroundings. During the winter months, Mauerläufer can be found on the cliff walls. Wasseramsel are common along the Kura river.

There is some debate on the occurrence of Klippenkleiber in this area, so be the first to definitively prove its occurrence! A small lake (1) along the road to Vardzia is good for migrants during Spring migration with Feldrohrsänger, Mariskenrohrsänger and many Zwergdommel.
