Beschreibung

Wöhrder Wiese is a large green space in central Nuremberg, located along the Pegnitz River and adjacent to the Wöhrder See. While primarily used for recreation, the area provides a mix of open grassland, scattered trees, and riparian vegetation that supports a variety of bird species. Its location at the edge of the city center makes it a convenient spot for casual birdwatching.

Typical sightings include common birds like Amsel, various tits, Ringeltaube, and Rabenkrähe. In spring and summer, species such as Zilpzalp, Mönchsgrasmücke, and Mauersegler can be observed. The nearby water bodies attract Stockente, Graureiher, and occasionally Kormoran or gulls. During migration periods, the area can host increased bird activity, especially along the river corridor.

Though not a dedicated bird reserve, Wöhrder Wiese offers opportunities to observe urban-adapted birds and seasonal visitors in a central, accessible setting.

While rare birds are not common at Wöhrder Wiese, occasional surprises occur, especially during migration. These may include Trauerschnäpper, Hausrotschwanz, or Grauschnäpper in the trees and shrubs. The area’s mix of habitats and central location make it a useful stopover for birds navigating the urban landscape.

Wöhrder Wiese is located just east of Nuremberg’s city center. Parking is available at nearby public garages such as “Parkhaus Wöhrder See” or along some adjacent streets, though spaces can be limited (Click on P on the map for directions)

The site is very bike-friendly, with dedicated cycle paths running through and around the park. It connects well to the city’s larger cycling network and the Pegnitz riverside route.

The area is easily reached by U-Bahn (underground) via the U2/U3 lines, stopping at “Wöhrder Wiese” station (marked with a star on the map). Several bus and tram lines also serve the area, making it highly accessible from all parts of the city.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Wöhrder Wiese is one of Nuremberg’s most popular urban green spaces, offering recreation, relaxation, and nature in the heart of the city. It is part of a larger ecological corridor along the Pegnitz River, which includes the Wöhrder See (Birdingplaces page for Wöhrder See see link below) and surrounding parks. The area is used for picnics, sports, and events, but also serves as an important green buffer and habitat for urban wildlife.

Efforts have been made in recent years to improve the ecological value of the area, including riverbank restoration and the creation of more natural vegetation zones. This contributes to its growing role as a space where people and nature can coexist - even in a densely populated urban environment.
