Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site encompassing the islands of Komodo, Rinca, and several smaller ones. The park was created primarily to protect the Komodo dragon, the world’s largest living lizard, which can grow up to three meters in length. The Komodo dragons are the main reason to travel to this remote corner, but Komodo Island is certainly also a nice place for bird watching. The dry savannah landscape holds some near-endemic birds like Tenggara Whistler, Wallacean Cuckooshrike and Wallacean Drongo.
The Loh Liang area on the island of Komodo is the most accessible and easy place to explore the national park. It is the main island where visitors go to see the Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Komodo Island offers well-maintained trekking paths that are relatively easy to navigate. The main trekking route on Komodo Island usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and offers a good chance to spot Komodo dragons as well as other wildlife like deer and water buffalo. Birds you can spot include Orange-footed Scrubfowl, White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Green Junglefowl, Green Imperial-Pigeon, Collared Kingfisher, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Helmeted Friarbird, Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker, Black-naped Oriole, Black-fronted Flowerpecker and Flame-breasted Sunbird.

On Komodo Island, the most visitor-friendly and accessible area is Loh Liang and its surrounding trekking trails. This is als where you find the West Komodo Ranger Station (1). This is the main entry point for tourists and the hub for guided tours to see Komodo dragons. To get to Komodo Island you have to take a ferry or speedboat from Labuan Bajo on Flores Island. The trip usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. There is no accommodation in the national park, so most visitors stay in Labuan Bajo.
The key trekking routes start from the West Komodo Ranger Station and lead through the island’s dry savannah landscape, offering good chances to spot Komodo dragons, wild deer, water buffalo, and many bird species. The trails here are well-marked and maintained, with options for shorter or longer walks depending on your energy and interest. The terrain is mostly dry savannah with some shaded areas, so it’s advisable to bring water, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes. The circular walking route shown on the map is about 5 km.
When you arrive at the park office on the island, you can arrange for one of the park rangers to be your bird guide. Do emphasize that you want to watch birds so that you get a ranger who really knows about birdwatching. Then one of the rangers will guide you throughout your birding in the park. There is no option for birding alone, as a ranger is always required to be with guests for safety reasons, and be on the lookout for Komodo dragons.

The best time to see Komodo dragons on Komodo Island is during the dry season, which runs roughly from April to December. During this period, the weather is generally sunny and dry, making trekking easier and increasing your chances of spotting active dragons. Komodo dragons are most visible in the morning and late afternoon when temperatures are cooler.
