Beschreibung

Mar Saba Monastery lies on the western ridge of the lower Kidron Valley (also known as Monks’ Valley), a steep desert canyon characterized by cliffs, ravines, and open wadis. The monastery complex consists of dozens of interconnected stone buildings clinging to the cliff face, overlooking a narrow valley floor. Although a natural stream once flowed through the valley, it is now replaced by polluted sewage water, which nonetheless continues to attract birds.

The monastery walls and surrounding ravines support a breeding colony of Rötelfalke, making this one of the most reliable sites to observe the species locally during spring. The open skies above the valley form an important migration corridor. During spring and autumn, large numbers of soaring birds pass overhead or descend to roost, including Weißstorch and Schwarzstorch, Wespenbussard, Steppe Buzzard, Wiesenweihe, and Schmutzgeier. Cliff faces and buildings host breeding Wüstenschwalbe and Rauchschwalbe, while Mauersegler, Fahlsegler, Alpensegler, and Haussegler are regular in spring and summer. Scenic lookouts around the monastery offer excellent vantage points for observing aerial activity and raptors. A circular walking trail around the monastery allows access to surrounding desert habitats, where species such as Arabienwüstenhuhn, Desert Lark, Schwarzrücken-Steinschmätzer, Blackstart, Brillengrasmücke, Wüstenrabe, and Long-billed Pipit can be encountered.

Overall, more than 120 resident and migratory bird species have been recorded here. Additional notable species include Zederngirlitz, Steinrötel, Rosenstar, and Kurzfangsperber.

Zugang

Mar Saba Monastery is reached by road from Bethlehem and Al-Ubeidiya town, followed by a short descent toward the valley. Parking is available at the designated parking area near the entrance viewpoint above the monastery. From there, access is on foot only, via a paved path descending toward the monastery, or the trails leading to the surrounding cliffs. There is no direct public transport to the monastery itself. The closest access by public transport is to Bethlehem, from where a taxi is required to reach the site.

The area is best explored on foot. Short walks around the monastery and along the nearby lookout points are ideal for birding, particularly for observing Rötelfalke and migrating raptors. A circular walking trail (~5km) around the monastery allows access to surrounding desert habitats, while longer hiking trails extend eastward toward the Harkonia Valley and the Dead Sea area. Bicycles are not suitable due to steep terrain, and cars are limited to the access road and parking area.

Allow 2–3 hours for a short visit focused on birding and viewpoints around the monastery. A half day or more is recommended if you plan to walk the circular trail or explore the longer desert routes.
