Beschreibung

Bueng Boraphet is the largest freshwater marsh and lake in central Thailand, located in Nakhon Sawan Province. The combination of reedbeds, lotus and lilies, open water and scrubland attracts many birds. The lake plays a crucial role as a natural habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, especially migratory and resident waterbirds. One of the best and easily accessible parts of the lake is Waterbird Park (Nok Nam Park). This park has trails, boardwalks and observation towers. Birds you can observe in the area include Spot-billed Pelican, Oriental Darter, Grey-headed Swamphen, Painted Stork, Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Black Bittern, Cinnamon Bittern, Yellow Bittern, Eastern Marsh-Harrier, Little Pratincole, Oriental Pratincole, White-browed Crake, and many species of ducks, herons, and egrets.

Along the trails you can find different habitats of small trees, reed beds, wet scrub and patches of grass. There you can find Asian Green Bee-eater, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Baya Weaver, Asian Golden Weaver, Striated Grassbird, Freckle-breasted Woodpecker, Spotted Owlet, Pink-necked Green-Pigeon and many more.

Zugang

Bueng Boraphet Waterbird Park (Nok Nam Park) is located 20 km east of the town of Nakhon Sawan. This town is 3 hours from Bangkok and 6 hours from Chiang Mai and any bus doing the journey between the two cities will stop at Nakhon Sawan bus station. Best way to get from Nakhon Sawan to Waterbird Park is by tuktuk or songthaew (shared truck taxi). If you have your own transport it is also easy to drive there. You can park at the entrance. Press P on the map for directions to the parking.

You can explore the park on foot. The trails in the area are about 3,5 km in total. In the bird observation towers you are quite far away from the birds. The views are nice but you need a telescope to see the birds well. Besides exploring the trails another good option is a boat trip on the lake for getting close-up views of the birds. Ask for boat trips at the kiosks near the toilets. Snacks and simple meals can also be found there.
