Beschreibung
Lower Hartshay and the Cromford Canal support a wide range of birds throughout the year. Sperber are often seen hunting over the village and surrounding fields, while Mäusebussard soar overhead and the occasional Rotmilan drifts through. Graureiher regularly feed along the reedbeds and canal edges, with Gebirgsstelze picking insects from the water margins. Schwanzmeise move through the trees in busy family parties, and Seidensänger are frequently heard calling from dense reedbeds.
Autumn and winter bring an increase in wildfowl and passage birds, with Kanadagans , Graugans , Stockente , Krickente and Pfeifente using the canal and nearby waters. Kiebitz , Bekassine and Wasserralle may appear in wetter areas, while Lachmöwe , Silbermöwe and Heringsmöwe gather on open water and fields. Thrushes are a highlight at this time of year, with Rotdrossel and Wacholderdrossel arriving from the continent alongside resident Singdrossel and Misteldrossel. Mixed tit flocks, Wintergoldhähnchen , Stieglitz , Erlenzeisig and Birkenzeisig are regular, and corvids including Dohle , Saatkrähe , Elster and Eichelhäher are ever-present.
Spring and summer see the area come alive with breeding birds and migrants. Mauersegler , Rauchschwalbe and Mehlschwalbe feed low over the canal and reedbeds, often joined by hunting Baumfalke in warm weather. Reedbeds hold Teichrohrsänger , Schilfrohrsänger and Seidensänger , while Klappergrasmücke and Zilpzalp sing from scrub and hedgerows. Gebirgsstelze , Teichhuhn , Bläßhuhn , Blaumeise and Kohlmeise regularly breed along the canal, and Feldlerche can be heard over nearby fields. Occasional highlights include Alpenbirkenzeisig Feldschwirl , Großer Brachvogel and Turmfalke.
Overall, this short walk offers excellent habitat diversity and rewarding birding in all seasons, with something new to see throughout the year.
