Beschreibung
The North Cornwall Coast has always been prone to bad weather with frequent sea mist reducing visibility, before the building of the Trevose Head lighthouse in 1847 the only lighthouses on this section of coast was the Longships Lighthouse (45 miles to the South West) and Lundy Island Lighthouse (45 miles to the North East). The headland is probably better known as a seawatching site but also has a good list of land birds. BE WARNED HIGH CLIFFS, there is a deep sheer round hole and quarry near Dinas Head (press STAR on map) near all year car park. DO NOT attempt to walk in low visibility/low light levels on the headland. The whole headland is very open and exposed with very little shelter from inclement weather.
Seabird passage tends not to be close to shore here as it is at headlands further South West (ie St Ives Island or Pendeen Watch - see separate entries), strong onshore winds from the North West/North/North East may force birds closer to land. From early in the season Atlantiksturmtaucher can pass by here, sometimes numbering in thousands, on feeding forays. Spatelraubmöwe, Schmarotzerraubmöwe, Falkenraubmöwe, Skua, Großer Sturmtaucher, Dunkler Sturmtaucher and Balearensturmtaucher are all possible in smaller numbers in Summer/Autumn. In Winter and into Spring small numbers of Sterntaucher and Eistaucher can be regularly seen, often sheltering in the bays on either side of the headland. Also Trauerente 'rafts' are a distinct possibility, always worth checking for a Samtente.
