Beschreibung
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for Pfeifente, Schnatterente and good numbers of Zwergtaucher. Lower fish numbers mean Haubentaucher are only in low numbers, Höckerschwan numbers can be very high for a inner city location and Schellente and Gänsesäger occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have Krickente, Löffelente, Teichhuhn, Bläßhuhn and Graureiher though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including Sturmmöwe and unusually for such an inland site Dreizehenmöwe.
(*3), the area of trees at the Eastern end of the park has Erlenzeisig and Tannenmeise, Schwanzmeise, Blaumeise and Kohlmeise are numerous. During Spring/Summer Dorngrasmücke, Fitis, Zilpzalp, Mönchsgrasmücke, Mehlschwalbe, Rauchschwalbe and Mauersegler can be seen. Flußseeschwalbe regularly turn up on passage.
