The Red River National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area situated along the Red River. This refuge spans about 11,000 acres and stretches along roughly 50 miles of the river. It encompasses wetlands, bottomland hardwood forests, and riparian habitats that are essential for a wide variety of wildlife.
Ecologically, the refuge is critical for migratory birds, including waterfowl, wading birds, and songbirds, providing them with breeding, feeding, and resting grounds. The primary conservation goals of the Red River NWR include protecting and restoring natural habitats in the floodplain and supporting biodiversity.
The birding is excellent year-round throughout most of the refuge. The refuge is a stopover point for over 200 species of migratory songbirds and shorebirds and provides wintering grounds for waterfowl and wading birds. The refuge forests are dominated by upland and bottomland hardwood habitats, which annually host various migrant, nesting, and wintering flycatchers, vireos, thrushes, warblers, and other songbirds. Meanwhile, pockets of cypress-tupelo swamp attract wading birds along with Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Wood Duck, Pileated Woodpecker, and Prothonotary Warbler, among others. Early spring, late fall, and winter are the best times for viewing waterfowl. Woodland songbirds are plentiful throughout the year. Winter is the time to look for Smith's Longspur and Harris's Sparrow.

Red River National Wildlife Refuge is made up of several units in the Red River Valley in northwestern Louisiana. Headquarters Unit is located in Bossier and Caddo Parishes. Directions to the Headquarters Unit: From I-20 take the Hamilton Road exit (20A) and turn south on Hamilton Road toward the casino. Turn left onto the Arthur Ray Teague Parkway and travel 6 miles south on parkway, the refuge entrance will be on your right. Press a P on the map for directions. The refuge is open to the public from sunrise to sunset all year round. There is no entry fee. The refuge has a large visitor center. A circular walk around Lake Caroline is about 3 miles.

The Headquarters Unit of the Red River National Wildlife Refuge offers over five miles of mowed and marked walking trails. Among the trails available are the Cottonwood Trail, which is about 1 mile long, the Lake Trail at approximately 1.4 miles, and the Orchard Trail, a shorter path of about 0.5 mile. There are also the Banding Site Trail that stretches roughly 0.3 mile, the River Overlook Trail of about 0.2 mile, and the River Trail which is around 0.8 mile in length. Additionally, the Arthur R. Teague Multi-Use Trail runs for about 1.05 miles, and the Lake Bluff Trail is close to 0.45 mile.
