Description
The Heuvelse Heide consists of a variety of dry sandy soils, heathlands and coniferous forests. The area also has a large body of water that is the result of sand extraction. The most beautiful spots in Heuvelse Heide are the coniferous forest, along the pond, along the canal and the small waterways. On the open heathlands, Μαυρολαίμης is a very common breeding bird. The Δεντροσταρήθρα and Δεντροκελάδα are also typical for these semi-open landscapes. In the open and wooded areas, birds of prey such as (Κοινή) Γερακίνα, Δεντρογέρακο, Διπλοσάϊνο and Βραχοκιρκίνεζο are regularly seen. The (Ευρωπαϊκός) Σφηκιάρης also occurs in the forest. The coniferous forests are home to species such as (Κοινός) Σταυρομύτης, Λοφιοπαπαδίτσα, Ελατοπαπαδίτσα and various woodpecker species.

Nederlands: De Heuvelse Heide in Lommel (onderdeel van Nationaal Park Bosland) bestaat uit een afwisseling van droge zandgronden, heidevelden en naaldbossen, wat zorgt voor een specifieke vogelpopulatie die typisch is voor de Limburgse Kempen. Ook heeft het gebied een grote waterplas die het resultaat is van zandontginning. Het schilderachtige landschap doet je versteld staan. De mooiste plekjes in Heuvelse Heide zijn het naaldbos, langs de waterplas, langs het kanaal en de kleine wateringen. Op de open heidevelden is de Μαυρολαίμης een zeer algemene broedvogel. Ook de Δεντροσταρήθρα en Δεντροκελάδα zijn typisch voor deze halfopen landschappen. In de open en bosrijke omgeving worden regelmatig roofvogels als (Κοινή) Γερακίνα, Δεντρογέρακο, Διπλοσάϊνο en Βραχοκιρκίνεζο gezien. Ook de (Ευρωπαϊκός) Σφηκιάρης komt in het bos voor. In de naaldbossen leven soorten als de (Κοινός) Σταυρομύτης, Λοφιοπαπαδίτσα, Ελατοπαπαδίτσα en diverse spechtensoorten.

Access
The Heuvelse Heide is located directly north of the town of Lommel. Press P on the map for directions to a parking spot. You can choose a 9 km long walking loop marked in red. Start and end point: Jachthaven de Meerpaal. A walking map is available at Visit Lommel or via the webshop. You can also choose a shorter route such as the route of approximately 5 km shown on the map below.
