Description
The area is of great importance for breeding birds of semi-natural grasslands and wetlands. Around 80 species of breeding birds are recorded annually, including (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Καλημάνα, Λευκός Πελαργός , (Κοκκινόλαιμο) Νανοβουτηχτάρι, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Νεροκοτσέλα, (Κοινό) Ορτύκι, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Σαρσέλα, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Κιρκίρι, (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρόπαπια, Καπακλής, Δεντρογέρακο, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Κούκος, Γαλαζολαίμης, Μαυρολαίμης, Καλαμοποταμίδα (rarely Σχοινοποταμίδα and Τσιχλοποταμίδα) and Αετομάχος. Large flocks of Ασπρομέτωπη Χήνα use the area during winter, and also a small group of Νανόχηνα from a rewilding project in Sweden has established a "tradition" to visit the area for wintering, starting in 2017. In late winter, the area serves as roosting place for hundreds of (Ευρωπαϊκός) Γερανός and during spring migration, a great variety of ducks and waders can be encountered. Occasionally, rarities show up (e.g. Πορφυροτσικνιάς, (Ευρωπαϊκη) Βαλτόπαπια, Μικροπουλάδα).

There is a car park in Heintrop, next to the sports field. From there, you can explore the area by foot or bike.
