Description

Zona Arqueológica Mayapán is one of the best preserved sites of the Maya civilization in the Yucatán Peninsula. It was the last major Maya city before the arrival of the Spanish and served as a political, religious, and cultural center from the 13th to the 15th century. One of the most iconic structures is the Temple of Kukulkán, which resembles the famous pyramid at Chichén Itzá.

The surrounding vegetation, including low deciduous forest and scrubland, provides habitat for both resident and migratory birds. Around Mayapán, you can expect to see a variety of birds such as trogons, motmots, woodpeckers, orioles, flycatchers and several species of hummingbirds. To see the most birds it is best to explore some of the quiet paths surrounding the Zona Arqueológica before the gates open at 8.
