Description
Burghead is situated on a narrow promontory projecting into the Moray Firth. The place is good for sea ducks in winter and waders on shore at low tide. Among the birds you can see are (Κοινή) Πουπουλόπαπια, Χιονόπαπια, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Μαυρόπαπια, Βελουδόπαπια, Razorbill, Common Guillemot, Black Guillemot, Θαλασσοπρίστης, Κοκκινοσκαλίδρα, (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα, Χαλικοκυλιστής, Βραχοσκαλίδρα, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Στρειδοφάγος, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Βουκεφάλα, Θαλασσοκελάδα and (Ευρωπαϊκός) Θαλασσοκόρακας. In summer the bay is fishing ground for Ψαραετός. Besides birds you can spot seals and dolphins. The Moray Firth is home to over 1500 common seals, and up to 500 grey seals come into the Firth in the summer. The Moray Firth is also home to the most northerly resident population of bottle nose dolphins in the world and on a calm day dolphins can be seen leaping out of the water.
