Description
This substantial area of dunes, saltmarsh, tidal mudflats, sea, freshwater and reedbeds lies just east of The Wash and attracts numerous migrant waders and passerines, winter wildfowl, and breeding birds.
First to be seen when arriving by road is Norfolk Wildlife Trust's Holme Dunes Reserve. Here there is a Visitor Centre, cafe, disabled parking, gift shop and several hides, one with disabled access. Children enter free and there are educational resources. Breeding birds include (Ευρωπαϊκή) Αβοκέτα and terns. In winter Χιονοτσίχλονο, Twite, Μαυρότρυγγας, Χειμωνοβουτηχτάρι, Δαχτυλιδόχηνα, Χωραφόχηνα, Χιονόπαπια and other rarities visit.
A mile further east is the Bird Observatory and bird ringing station run by Norfolk Ornithologists' Trust. An early autumn visit may produce thousands of waders such as (Ευρωπαϊκός) Στρειδοφάγος, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Βροχοπούλι, (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα, Κοκκινοσκέλης as well as (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρομύτα, Αργυροτσικνιάς and (Κοινός) Λευκοτσικνιάς, and rare passerines such as Διπλοκεφαλάς, Γερακοτσιροβάκος, Κιτρινόφρυδος Φυλλοσκόπος, Χιονοκότσυφας and Μαυρομυγοχάφτης may turn up.
