Description
The Solway Firth is an extensive and remote area of saltmarsh, mudflats, sandy coast, dunes and reedbeds attracting a wide range of wetland birds. Breeding and passage waders include Κοκκινοσκέλης, Χαλικοκυλιστής, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Στρειδοφάγος and (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα. Winter wildfowl and seabirds include (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρόπαπια, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Κιρκίρι, Αγριόκυκνος, Pink-footed Goose, Barnacle Goose, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Βουκεφάλα, (Κοινή) Πουπουλόπαπια, and divers, grebes, and auks. Also look out for (Κοινός) Λευκοτσικνιάς, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Αλκυόνη, (Κοινή) Σιταρήθρα, Μαυρολαίμης and Λιβαδοκελάδα. Otters are possible, plus seals, porpoise and dolphin offshore. At Grune Point the receding sea leaves tidal lagoons ideal for rockpooling.
