Description
An extensive area of self-sown scrubland holds good numbers of warblers in summer, mainly Θαμνοφυλλοσκόπος and Δεντροφυλλοσκόπος, but also Lesser Whitethroat and Μαυροσκούφης. More mature trees provide habitat for Χουχουριστής. Δεντροτσοπανάκος and Πράσινος Παπαγάλος have become common in recent years. The Wallsend Burn holds regular (Ευρωπαϊκή) Αλκυόνη and Σταχτοσουσουράδα, and occasional (Ευρωπαϊκός) Νεροκότσυφας in winter. In its lower tidal section Κοκκινοσκέλης is regular, and the semi-tame Πρασινοκέφαλη Πάπιαs can attract other ducks, including Βαρβάρα, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Κιρκίρι, and more rarely Ψαλίδα (του Βορά) and Mandarin Duck. There is limited viewing of the River Tyne where the stream runs into the Tyne, but is still worth checking for inland seabirds on the main river; Παγοβούτι, Common Guillemot and Razorbill have all been seen here on occasion, and in summer there is a constant procession of Τριδάκτυλος Γλάροςs moving to and from their nesting sites further upsteam.
