North Lake sits in a rustic, less‑visited corner of Golden Gate Park. It’s surrounded by dense greenery, making it feel more like a hidden forest pond than part of a major city park. The area attracts a variety of birds and in winter many ducks. Birds you have a good chance of seeing include Pied-billed Grebe, Steller's Jay, Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck, Ruddy Duck, Anna's Hummingbird, Black-crowned Night Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Downy Woodpecker, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Pygmy Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Pacific Wren, Pine Siskin, Townsend's Warbler, Wilson's Warbler and Cedar Waxwing.

North Lake is located in the northwest corner of Golden Gate Park, in the city of San Francisco. It sits just south of Fulton Street and near 43rd Avenue. Street parking is usually available on 43rd or 47th Avenue. If you’re taking public transit the most convenient lines are: N Judah (get off near 43rd Ave, then walk north into the park). Bus 5 or 5R (get off near 43rd Ave and walk south into the park). North Lake is part of the Chain of Lakes Trail, which also passes Middle and South Lake.
