Fange de l'Abîme (Réserve naturelle domaniale Fange de l'Abîme) is a nature reserve on the Croix-Scaille plateau, a short distance from the French border. Croix-Scaille (505 m) is the highest point in the western Ardennes. Fange de l'Abîme is covering just over 8 hectares and consists of marshy meadows with molinia, willow and bog birch forests, and heathlands with residual heather. This clearing is currently surrounded by vast stands of spruce and clear-cutting. The site is known as home to some of the most remarkable flora and fauna. The reserve was established in 1985 and encompasses the remaining peatland. It is classified as a Site de grand intérêt biologique (Site of great biological interest). The nature reserve is protected by European law as part of the Vallée de la Hulle Natura 2000 area. The River Hulle has its source there.
A boardwalk winds through the reserve. Between 2006 and 2009, a Life project was carried out to restore peatlands and create space for natural deciduous forest. The Fange de l'Abîme is home to adder, the rare royal fern (Osmunda regalis), as well as the fen orchid (Dactylorhiza sphagnicola). Birds you can observe include Tarabilla común, Cuco Común, Piquitureto Común, Chotacabras Europeo, Picamaderos Negro, Chocha Perdiz and Alcaudón Norteño.

Fange de l'Abîme is located on the Croix-Scaille plateau near Gedinne, on the French-Belgian border in the Ardennes. The Tour du Millénaire, a 60-meter-high observation tower, stands on the plateau. From the parking at the Tour du Millénaire it is a 2 km walk to Fange de l'Abîme. Press P on the map for directions parking to the parking at the Tour du Millénaire.
