The Mindo Lindo reserve was reforested early on by its dedicated owners and is now a paradise not only for numerous extraordinary birds and other animal species, but also for rare plants such as the endangered tree species "Magnolia mindoensis" which is being replanted through various projects of the reserve. That aside, in addition to the hummingbird feeders commonly found around Mindo, there are plenty of opportunities to spot a wide variety of colorful and of course some rare bird species as you make your way through the area.
You can explore the reserve via a beautiful and varied loop trail, a small observation tower, and more recently a small light trap where you can take a closer look at all the insects attracted by the spotlight. Ornithological highlights of the area include Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Pale-mandibled Aracari, Golden-headed Quetzal, Rufous Motmot and Masked Trogon. In addition to several tanagers, almost all the hummingbird species typical of this altitude, such as Violet-tailed Sylph, Brown Inca, White-necked Jacobin, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird or White-booted Racket-tail can be easily observed at the feeders. Furthermore, numerous mammals regularly roam the area, including the common Tayra and the endangered Ecuadorian capuchin.

Mindo Lindo is located 75 km northwest of Quito. You can reach Mindo Lindo directly from the main road that runs between Quito and Santo Domingo at km 79, shortly after the turnoff leading down to the village of Mindo. Press P on the map for directions. Down in the valley, there are also other excellent spots for birdwatching which have made this small village famous far beyond Ecuador’s borders.
Right at the reserve, there is plenty of parking available and you can spend the night in your camper or even rent a small room. Just contact the really nice owners either in Spanish, English or German!
