Descripción
The Étangs Nérac are a group of historic fishponds. They were created in the seventeenth century and later restored as a protected natural site. Covering about 20 hectares, they are part of the Natura 2000 network. Restoration projects in the early 2000s reconnected the ponds to natural water systems. The ponds are rich in biodiversity, with more than 140 bird species recorded. Birds that have been observed include Pájaro-moscón Europeo, Águila Pescadora, Rascón Europeo, Oropéndola Europea, and migrating Grulla Común.

The Étangs Nérac are located in the Sundgau region of Alsace, near the villages of Altenach and Saint-Ulrich, about 30 km southwest of Mulhouse. Parking is available near the ponds. Press P on the map for directions. There are walking trails along the ponds and through the surrounding wetlands. A bird hide is located in the middle of the area. Guided walks are regularly organized by the Maison de la Nature in Altenach (contact@maison-nature-sundgau.org).
