The Forêt de Brocéliande is a forest steeped in myth and folklore, especially associated with Arthurian legends. It is often linked to the tales of King Arthur, Merlin the wizard, and the Knights of the Round Table. The forest covers a large area of mixed woodland, featuring ancient oaks, beeches, and pines, and is known for its mysterious atmosphere created by dense foliage, moss-covered stones, and winding paths. The Chêne des Hindrés is one of the remarkable ancient oak trees located in the Forêt de Brocéliande. This oak is famous not only for its impressive size and age but also for its connection to local legends and the mystical atmosphere of the forest.

The forest supports a diverse range of wildlife, including deer, wild boar, and bird species such as Cuco Común, Mosquitero Silbador, Reyezuelo Sencillo, Trepador Azul, Papamoscas Gris, Picogordo Común, Herrerillo Capuchino and different species of woodpecker.

Accesso

The Forêt de Brocéliande is located 40 km west of Rennes. The parking area near Rocher de Carieu is a convenient starting point for hikes through the forest. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. The circular walking route shown on the map is about 9 km, but kan be easily shortened.

The Tombeau de Merlin (Tomb of Merlin) is located within the Forêt de Brocéliande. Although Merlin is a fictional character, this site has become a symbol of the rich folklore and mystical atmosphere that surrounds the forest. The Tomb of Merlin is actually a large, ancient stone structure known as a dolmen - a type of megalithic tomb built during the Neolithic period. It is surrounded by tall trees and moss-covered rocks, adding to its mysterious and magical ambiance.
