Descripción
Vardzia is a 12th‑century cave monastery complex. The site combines a great site with historical significance with birdwatching. Trepador Rupestre Occidental are numerous and a walk through the many rooms hacked into the stone face of the valley will result in hearing Serín Frentirrojo and Roquero Solitario. During Spring and Summer months, Vencejo Real can be seen high above the valley. There are many nests of Avión Roquero and Avión Común along the rock faces and Perdiz chúcar can be heard in the surroundings. During the winter months, Treparriscos can be found on the cliff walls. Mirlo-acuático Europeo are common along the Kura river.
There is some debate on the occurrence of Trepador Armenio in this area, so be the first to definitively prove its occurrence! A small lake (1) along the road to Vardzia is good for migrants during Spring migration with Carricero Agrícola, Carricerín Real and many Avetorillo común.

Vardzia is located in southern Georgia, near the village of Gogasheni, about 30 km from Aspindza and 60 km southeast of Akhaltsikhe. The site can be reached easily and has its own parking lot. Press P on the map for directions. Entry fee is 15 GEL (~€5 in 2025). Drive from Aspindza is ~40min, and ~1h from Akhalkalaki.

Vardzia is a vast cave monastery complex carved into the cliff face. It was built in the 12th century under King Giorgi III and Queen Tamar, and at its height contained hundreds of rooms, chapels, wine cellars, and the Church of the Dormition with its frescoes. Visitors can explore its labyrinth of tunnels and chambers. Vardzia Cave Monastery is open daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM during the main season (spring–autumn), and from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM in winter. Tickets are sold at the entrance.
