Descripción

Reserva Natural Privada Los Tarrales lies on the southern slopes of Volcán Atitlán, where humid lowland forest gradually rises into lush cloud forest. That elevational range is what makes the place so extraordinary: you can encounter tropical species at dawn in the plantations and, only a few hours later, be in cool, misty forest searching for some of Central America’s rarest birds.

Birders come to Los Tarrales for two main reasons. The first is the Horned Guan, a bird that survives only in a handful of high‑elevation forests in Guatemala and Mexico. The second is the Azure-rumped Tanager, a beautiful and highly localized bird that is easiest to find in this region. You can also find the Guatemalan Flicker, endemic to Central America. But many more birds can be observed. More than 350 species have been recorded, including hummingbirds, trogons, woodcreepers, antbirds, and a long list of migrants that pass through during the northern winter.

Accesso

Reserva Natural Privada Los Tarrales sits on the southern slopes of Volcán Atitlán in the department of Suchitepéquez, about 130 km west of Guatemala City. The official address is: Los Tarrales Natural Reserve km 164.2, Ruta Nacional 11 Patulul, Suchitepéquez, Guatemala. Press P on the map for directions or coordinates.

Note that this is a private reserve and hotel. The reserve itself is part of a historic coffee finca, and that gives the place a distinctive atmosphere. Trails begin among coffee plants and shade trees, then climb into wilder forest. The accommodations are simple but comfortable.

The dry season, from November to April, is the most pleasant time to visit, both for weather and for birding conditions. Many people combine Los Tarrales with other nearby reserves such as Los Andes or with time around Lake Atitlán.
