Descripción

The wider Sakule Fish Farm area encompasses the meandering course of the free-flowing River Tamis, where it spills into a vast natural retention, where flooded meadows and vast marshes occupy most of the non-arable land. The fish ponds were known for their low intensivity management and well-developed aquatic vegetation, especially floatant. And yet, last winter significant areas of reedbeds disappeared in flames and, this spring, dry lake beds were plowed over (I fear the ponds will be turned into arable fields?!). Apart from the ponds, there are preserved areas under indigenous forests as well as extensive industrial poplar plantations.

Birds of this wetland are Porrón Pardo, Cerceta Carretona, Avetoro Común, Avetorillo común, Garceta Grande, Garcilla Cangrejera , Garza Imperial, Morito Común, Espátula Común, numerous breeding Fumarel Cariblanco (plus Fumarel Común and occasional Fumarel Aliblanco on migration), numerous Cigüeña Blanca (about 30 nests in the village), Abubilla común, Abejaruco Europeo, Mochuelo Europeo, Pico Sirio , Escribano Palustre, Carricero Tordal, Buscarla Unicolor, Pájaro-moscón Europeo, Bigotudo, Alcaudón Dorsirrojo.

Accesso

About 50 km / 1 hr north of Belgrade, when you reach the church in the village of Sakule, use the street to the left, right opposite to the church yard gate, and follow it till the very end. When you reach a T-junction, turn left to reach the Jer Lake embankment. For driving directions, zoom in on the map and click on the "P" (parking) sign.

This levee can be extremely muddy after rains, especially during Autumn and Winter, making the ground very slippery.

Further along lies a distant shallow shorebird lake, yet the southern half of the embankment is more suitable for mule rides than driving—recommendable only on foot.

The watchtowers have no stairs but very steep ladders instead. On sunny days try not to come here too early, because most of the lake stretches towards the east and the sun glare on the water surface will effectively blind you.
