Descripción
Lower Hartshay and the Cromford Canal support a wide range of birds throughout the year. Gavilán Común are often seen hunting over the village and surrounding fields, while Busardo ratonero soar overhead and the occasional Milano Real drifts through. Garza Real regularly feed along the reedbeds and canal edges, with Lavandera Cascadeña picking insects from the water margins. Mito Común move through the trees in busy family parties, and Cetia Ruiseñor are frequently heard calling from dense reedbeds.
Autumn and winter bring an increase in wildfowl and passage birds, with Barnacla canadiense grande , Ánsar común , Ánade azulón , Cerceta Común and Silbón Europeo using the canal and nearby waters. Avefría Europea , Agachadiza común and Rascón Europeo may appear in wetter areas, while Gaviota Reidora , Gaviota argéntea europea and Gaviota sombría gather on open water and fields. Thrushes are a highlight at this time of year, with Zorzal Alirrojo and Zorzal Real arriving from the continent alongside resident Zorzal Común and Zorzal Charlo. Mixed tit flocks, Reyezuelo Sencillo , Jilguero Europeo , Jilguero Lúgano and Pardillo Norteño are regular, and corvids including Grajilla Occidental , Graja , Urraca común and Arrendajo Euroasiático are ever-present.
Spring and summer see the area come alive with breeding birds and migrants. Vencejo Común , Golondrina Común and Avión Común feed low over the canal and reedbeds, often joined by hunting Alcotán Europeo in warm weather. Reedbeds hold Carricero Común , Carricerín Común and Cetia Ruiseñor , while Curruca Zarcerilla and Mosquitero Común sing from scrub and hedgerows. Lavandera Cascadeña , Gallineta Común , Focha Común , Herrerillo Común and Carbonero Común regularly breed along the canal, and Alondra Común can be heard over nearby fields. Occasional highlights include Pardillo Alpino Buscarla Pintoja , Zarapito Real and Cernícalo vulgar.
Overall, this short walk offers excellent habitat diversity and rewarding birding in all seasons, with something new to see throughout the year.
