Chief habitats in Elan Valley and Gigrin Kites are: streams and open water, frequented by grebes, Mirlo-acuático Europeo and Lavandera Cascadeña. The ancient sessile oak woodland is home to Colirrojo Real, Papamoscas Cerrojillo, Mosquitero Silbador, Agateador Euroasiático, Gavilán Común and open moorland containing Búho Campestre, Esmerejón, Zarapito Real, Chorlito Dorado Europeo, Correlimos Común, Lagópodo Común, Collalba Gris, Alondra Común, Tarabilla común Aguilucho pálido and Cuervo Grande.

Kite feeding station south of Rhayader feeds daily each afternoon. It has a hide and parking. Reservoirs are west of Rhayader and have several car parks, wetland birds usually at top ends. For a circular drive to see 4 of the 5 reservoirs, keep turning right to follow Elan valley. Claerwen reservoir is a dead end for cars.
