Descripción

Antelope Island is the largest island in Utah’s Great Salt Lake, famous for its free‑roaming bison herds, pronghorn antelope, lake views and birdwatching. The island is 15 miles by 5 miles wide and the landscape is a mix of rolling hills, grasslands, and rocky outcrops. More than 250 bird species have been recorded. Millions of birds migrate through here every year in the fall and spring. Birds you can observe on the island include Burrowing Owl, Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Loggerhead Shrike, Western Meadowlark, Sage Thrasher, Rock Wren, Mountain Bluebird, Brewer's Sparrow, Bullock's Oriole, American Barn Owl, Chukar and Horned Lark.

To get to the island you have to travel via the causeway that connects Syracuse to Antelope Island across the Great Salt Lake. This road is 7 miles long and a paradise for birders in itself, especially during spring and fall migrations. The shallow waters and mudflats attract huge numbers of shorebirds and waterfowl. You can expect to see Wilson's Phalarope, American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, Long-billed Curlew and sandpipers in abundance. Raptors patrol the skies, while gulls and terns line the shoreline. During peak migration, the spectacle can involve tens of thousands of birds feeding and resting in view of the road.

Accesso

Antelope Island lies in Davis County, roughly 35 miles north of Salt Lake City. The island is reached by a 7 mile causeway from the town of Syracuse. Best way to get there is by car. Press a P on the map for directions. You have to pay an entrance state park fee of 15$ (2025), at the tollbooth at the beginning of the causeway (1). Antelope Island has several miles of paved roads that allow visitors to easily drive to many different locations on the island, including several hiking trail-heads, the visitors center, and the Garr Ranch.

If you want you can also visit the visitors center which will have exhibits and a film that can be watched for a fee. You can also bike once you are there or take any of the hiking trails that are available. It usually takes a couple of hours to drive all of the roads on antelope Island and causeway. Driving the island roads is one of the best ways to find many of the birds which live on the island.
