Description

The Ornithon is a bird hide on private property in Bogee, accessed by ticket for Wirimbirra Bird Walk. See the link below. Woodland eucalypt grasslands and forest in the Important Bird Area and Key Biodiversity Area of the widest canyon in the world - the Capertee Valley. There are a few dams surrounding the bird hide. The Capertee Valley Bird Trail (see link below) is along the main road.

242 bird species have been recorded. Birds you can encounter include Rainbow Bee-eater , Shining Bronze Cuckoo , Peaceful Dove , Spotted Pardalote , White-throated Treecreeper , Golden Whistler and Rufous Whistler , Grey Fantail , Dusky Woodswallow , Superb Fairywren, Eastern Yellow Robin , Scarlet Robin.

Access

The Capertee Valley is part of the Greater Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. Bogee is approximately 3.5hrs from Sydney.

A train will get to you from Sydney to Lithgow, but a car is needed after that. Drive along the Castlereagh Highway to Capertee. Right onto Glen Davis Rd until almost at Glen Davis then left onto Glen Alice Road. Drive through Glen Alice and after passing Port Macquarie Rd on the left, in 2km take right hand turn onto Noola Rd at the Bogee Fire Shed. Wirimbirra is 4 km along this road on the right.
