Description
The area is of great importance for breeding birds of semi-natural grasslands and wetlands. Around 80 species of breeding birds are recorded annually, including kuovi, töyhtöhyyppä, kattohaikara , pikku-uikku, Luhtakana, viiriäinen, heinätavi, tavi, Lapasorsa, harmaasorsa, nuolihaukka, käki, sinirinta, mustapäätasku, rytikerttunen (rarely ruokokerttunen and rastaskerttunen) and pikkulepinkäinen. Large flocks of tundrahanhi use the area during winter, and also a small group of kiljuhanhi from a rewilding project in Sweden has established a "tradition" to visit the area for wintering, starting in 2017. In late winter, the area serves as roosting place for hundreds of Kurki and during spring migration, a great variety of ducks and waders can be encountered. Occasionally, rarities show up (e.g. ruskohaikara, ruskosotka, pikkuhuitti).
