Description
The Büsnauer Wiesental (Büsnau meadow valley) is a protected area to the south-west of Stuttgart in direct proximity to the university campus Stuttgart Vaihingen, the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research and the Pfaffenwald forest. The Wiesental consists of meadows, small streams and ponds, hedges and a few reeds and is the only remaining part of a once much larger meadow landscape.
Even though the area is quite small, the Büsnauer Wiesental can be excellent for a variety of passerine birds that are rather uncommon or rare around the city of Stuttgart. närhi, pyrstötiainen, hippiäinen, viitatiainen, keltasirkku, räkättirastas, kottarainen and tammitikka can be found here throughout the entire year. rytikerttunen, luhtakerttunen, lehtokerttu, tulipäähippiäinen, pikkulepinkäinen and haarahaukka are common to uncommon summer guests. In winter, kulorastas, vihervarpunen and nokkavarpunen can readily be observed, while punatulkku and vuorikirvinen are uncommon.
With some luck, migration can bring in particular highlights, like pensastasku, kivitasku or kirjosieppo, as well as niittykirvinen and metsäkirvinen.
Though technically not part of the protected area, the nearby Pfaffenwald forest houses many interesting forest birds that can sometimes even be observed around the edges of the area. These include kuusitiainen, töyhtötiainen, puukiipijä and palokärki. The roost of a lehtopöllö is just at the edge of the forest and well known by local birders.
