Fantastic place to watch birds and a must see in The Netherlands. The Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve (a National Park, aprox. 6,000 hectares) offers various bird hides on the edges and areas open to the public. It has an amazing variety of warblers, waders and waterfowl. The visitor center is a good starting point for exploring the Oostvaardersplassen. Various hiking, cycling routes and excursions start there. The first place where merikotka made his comeback in The Netherlands. Specialties of the area: kapustahaikara, viiksitimali, uivelo, isokoskelo, merikotka, sinirinta, ruskosuohaukka.

Access
The Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve is located directly east of the city of Almere. Press P on the map for directions to the parking lot at the visitor center. There are several hiking and cycling routes, but only the routes at the "Buitencentrum Oostvaardersplassen" visitor center allow you to enter the area itself. The trails that start from the visitor center pass many nice bird hides and viewpoints. If you want to delve deeper into the area, you can take a tour, but note that these must be booked in advance. The map shows the hiking routes that start from the visitor center. Allow at least a whole morning or afternoon to explore these walks. You can also cycle around the entire Oostvaardersplassen area (approximately 35 km).
Admission is free. The visitor center also has a restaurant with a terrace overlooking several bird-rich lakes. You will also find an information desk and shop. The visitor center is open from 10:00 to 16:00 and closed on Mondays.

Nederlands: De Oostvaardersplassen liggen direct ten oosten van Almere. Druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar de parkeerplaats bij het bezoekerscentrum 'Buitencentrum Oostvaardersplassen'. Er zijn diverse wandel- en fietsroutes, maar alleen via de wandelroutes bij het bezoekerscentrum kun je het gebied zelf betreden. De wandelroutes die vanuit het bezoekerscentrum vertrekken, lopen langs veel mooie vogelkijkhutten en uitzichtpunten. Wil je dieper het gebied in, dan is dat mogelijk met een excursie die je van tevoren moet reserveren. Op de kaart staan de wandelroutes aangegeven die vanuit het bezoekerscentrum lopen. Trek er minimaal een hele ochtend of middag voor uit. Je kunt ook met de fiets om het hele gebied van de Oostvaardersplassen heen fietsen (ongeveer 35 km).
In het bezoekerscentrum is ook een restaurant met uitzicht over enkele vogelrijke plassen vanaf het terras. En je vindt er een infobalie en winkel. Het bezoekerscentrum is geopend vanaf 10.00 tot 16.00 uur en op maandag gesloten.

The 5600 ha Oostvaardersplassen is a eutrophic wetland in the central part of the Netherlands, situated in the polder Zuid Flevoland, which was reclaimed in 1968. The marsh zone in this nature reserve takes up 3700 ha, the terrestrial part 1900 ha. Soil fertility is high. Since its reclamation from the freshwater lake IJsselmeer, the vegetation of the Oostvaardersplassen has rapidly developed by natural succession. The area became an internationally important wetland for migrating water birds such as waders and geese.

Het moerasgebied in dit natuurgebied beslaat 3700 ha, het landdeel 1900 ha. De bodemvruchtbaarheid is hoog. Sinds de ontginning heeft de vegetatie van de Oostvaardersplassen zich snel ontwikkeld door natuurlijke successie.
