Description
Often, a business park doesn't blend in well with the surrounding farmland. Between farmland and the industrial estate, there's usually a rough and untidy no-man's-land. This isn't the case at the Witte Paal in Schagen. The province once awarded Schagen a prize for its beautiful integration with the surrounding countryside. Witte Paal is a nice area for birding. Various habitats (meadows, ponds, reed beds, businesses, and homes) are located in close proximity. The 2.7 km circular walk passes all these areas and is best done in the spring. In recent years, the following species have been seen in spring: sinirinta, silkkikerttunen, ruskosuohaukka, kaulushaikara, Luhtakana, punasotka.

Nederlands: De Witte Paal is de naam van het bedrijventerrein aan de zuidzijde van Schagen. Vaak sluit een bedrijventerrein niet zo mooi aan bij de omliggende landerijen. Tussen boerenland en bedrijventerrein ligt meestal een ruig en rommelig niemandsland. In Schagen is dat niet het geval. Ooit werd door de provincie aan Schagen een prijs uitgereikt omdat het stadje zo mooi aansluit op het omliggende land. Voor vogels is het een interessant gebied. Verschillende biotopen (weiland, waterpartijen, rietkragen, bedrijven en woningen) liggen vlak naast elkaar. De rondwandeling (2,7 km) gaat langs al deze gebieden en kun je het best in de lente maken. De laatste jaren hebben zich in het voorjaar de volgende soorten laten zien: sinirinta, silkkikerttunen, ruskosuohaukka, kaulushaikara, Luhtakana, punasotka.

Witte Paal is located on the south side of Schagen. The walk is only accessible on foot. At Witte Paal no. 62A there is a gate behind which is a BMX track. To the right of that a narrow path begins. That is where the walk starts. After 80 meters the path bends to the left and after 270 meters it goes sharply left towards the northeast. You will walk over a small dike between two ponds. The ruskosuohaukka breeds in the reeds on the right. kaulushaikara and Luhtakana are difficult to see but possibly you can hear them. After 470 meters you will find a number of thick tree trunks on the route. These are there to prevent noisy people from tearing through the area on their quads. Immediately after the tree trunks turn right through a section of industrial estate. A pair of sarvipöllö often breeds near Witte Paal no. 43. The road bends to the left and must be crossed after the bend towards the grass path. Cross the small bridge and walk along the Grotewallerweg a little to the right until you see a small pedestrian bridge. Cross the bridge and then walk left along the water. Cross at a large concrete slab and turn right. In the right season, it is definitely worthwhile to walk half a circle around the last water to the next bridge. Many orchids bloom there that originate from the Zwanenwater (also a beautiful bird spot).
Return along the other side of the water. The footpath is clearly signposted. Cross the same bridge again in the opposite direction and turn left on the other side of the bridge. Follow the Grotewallerweg to the Wilgenhoeve (no. 48) and turn right there onto the footpath (Muggenburgerweg). Due to complaints from farmers, geese have been hunted here extensively. In the spring there were a few hundred, but by August 2025 not a single one was left. The meadows on your left are not very rich in herbs. Meadow birds are scarce. At the end of that path, turn right and then straight ahead. After the bend to the right, you're back at the starting point.

Nederlands: Witte Paal ligt aan de zuidkant van Schagen. De wandeling is alleen te voet begaanbaar. Bij Witte Paal nr 62A is een hek waarachter een fietscrossbaan ligt. Rechts daarvan begint een smal paadje. Daar start de wandeling. Na 80 meter buigt het pad naar links en na 270 meter gaat het scherp naar links richting noordoost. Je loopt daar over een dijkje tussen twee waterplassen. In het riet rechts broedt de ruskosuohaukka. kaulushaikara en Luhtakana laten zich er slecht zien maar mogelijk wel horen. Na 470 meter vind je op de route een aantal dikke boomstammen. Die moeten voorkomen dat luidruchtige lui met een quad door het gebied gaan scheuren. Direct ná de boomstammen naar rechts door een stukje bedrijventerrein. Ter hoogte van Witte Paal nr 43 broedt vaak een paartje sarvipöllö. De weg loopt in een bocht naar links en moet ná de bocht worden overgestoken richting graspaadje. Steek het bruggetje over en loop over de Grotewallerweg een stukje naar rechts tot er een klein voetgangersbruggetje te zien is. Steek dat bruggetje over en loop dan linksom langs het water. Bij een grote betonplaat oversteken en rechtsaf slaan. Het is in het juiste seizoen echt de moeite om even tot het volgende bruggetje een half rondje om het laatste water te lopen. Er bloeien daar veel orchideeën die hun oorsprong hebben in het Zwanenwater (ook een mooi vogelplekje).
Terug langs de andere kant van het water. Het voetpad is duidelijk aangegeven. Dezelfde brug nogmaals oversteken in omgekeerde richting en aan de andere kant van de brug linksaf slaan. Volg de Grotewallerweg tot de Wilgenhoeve (nr48) en sla daar rechtsaf het voetpad (Muggenburgerweg) in. Wegens klachten van boeren is hier fel op ganzen gejaagd. In het voorjaar zaten er een paar honderd maar in augustus 2025 niet één meer. De weilanden aan je linkerhand zijn niet erg kruidenrijk. Weidevogels zijn er schaars. Aan het einde van dat pad rechtsaf gaan en daarna rechtdoor. Ná de bocht naar rechts ben je weer bij het startpunt.
