Description
The reservoir is shallow, having only a maximum depth of 9m (30’), which makes it very attractive to both dabbling and diving ducks. It occasionally attracts less common wildfowl, such as isokoskelo and mustalintu and härkälintu, mustakaulauikku and mustakurkku-uikku. Waders are often present in spring and autumn, including suokukko, metsäviklo, taivaanvuohi, punajalkaviklo, meriharakka and pikkutylli. Scaling Dam can also be an excellent place to watch raptors and, from the hide, an eye should always be kept on the moorland plateau and valleys for sinisuohaukka, ruskosuohaukka, ampuhaukka and muuttohaukka and, if you are extremely lucky, isohaarahaukka or piekana. The site is also good for summer visitors, such as käki, pensastasku and pajulintu, and residents like mustapäätasku, virtavästäräkki and pikkuvarpunen.
There is a hide for birdwatching where you might see töyhtöhyyppä, merihanhi, kanadanhanhi, laulujoutsen and many wading birds.
