Description
An extensive area of self-sown scrubland holds good numbers of warblers in summer, mainly pajulintu and tiltaltti, but also hernekerttu and mustapääkerttu. More mature trees provide habitat for lehtopöllö. pähkinänakkeli and kauluskaija have become common in recent years. The Wallsend Burn holds regular kuningaskalastaja and virtavästäräkki, and occasional koskikara in winter. In its lower tidal section punajalkaviklo is regular, and the semi-tame sinisorsas can attract other ducks, including ristisorsa, tavi, and more rarely jouhisorsa and mandariinisorsa. There is limited viewing of the River Tyne where the stream runs into the Tyne, but is still worth checking for inland seabirds on the main river; amerikanjääkuikka, etelänkiisla and ruokki have all been seen here on occasion, and in summer there is a constant procession of pikkukajavas moving to and from their nesting sites further upsteam.
